Are floods, gales and droughts here to stay? It seems so.
What weeks, months or years we have. Raging rivers there, gales here, tornados over there. What? Tornado? In places supposed to be nice seaside resorts of sunny shores and gentle showers, not some dusty town in America’s Tornado Alley. We’ve had flash floods, mudslides
wiping away a whole village, heat waves with temperatures hitting 54 centigrade produced drought and devastating, wind-driven wildfires. Deluges, droughts, fires, hails, landslides, avalanches, gales, tornados:is it just our imagination or the weather is getting worse?
The short answer is yes, the weather is definiately getting worse. The cause is air pollution that pours greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane into the atmosphere to produce global warming that can alter weather patterns. Whether the specific storms that knocked down trees, flooded rivers and battered countries nowadays can be attributed to the warning trend is a subject of serious-and contentious- scientific debate. But most climate experts agree that so-called extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and the weather worldwide over the coming 100 years will change drastically.
There will be a south to north shift in climatic resourses. Northern regions will be wetter and warmer, southern regions will be drier and hotter. Sea level is rising, floods are
getting more frequent, tornadoes are striking. This trend can be irreversible, so this is the high time to do something.
But what? In the Paris Agreement, each country determines, plans and regularly reports its own contribution it should make in order to mitigate global warming. There is no mechanism to force a country to set a specific target by a specific date, but each target should go beyond previously set targets.
Personally you can do a lot , as well. Use rain water to flush toilet, don’t let the taps drip, the pipes leak. Use your bike or walk more leaving your car at home. And it doesn’t really matter if you don’t drop your appliances and always buy newer and newer ones. Of course, they’re trendy but they turn to be useless if we destroy the Earth. It can’t be the aim to have a great last selfie. Who do you want to show it?
